The 2010 Subaru Legacy uses Subaru's trademark Boxer engine with its horizontal pistons which provide a lower center of gravity. Subaru has been using the Boxer engine since 1966. There have been many upgrades over the years and the 2010 Legacy introduces more improvements. The 2010 Legacy's base engine is similar to the 2009 version, a four-cylinder, 2.5 liter engine. The 2009 Legacy produced 175 horsepower and 169 pound-feet of torque while the 2010 version produces 170 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. The base engine with the default manual transmission results in an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimated 19 miles per gallon (mpg) city and 27 mpg highway, combining for an overall 22 mpg. Upgrading to the continuously variable transmission results in an EPA estimated 23 mpg city and 31 mpg highway, combining for an impressive 26 mpg.

For those looking for more sporty performance, a turbocharged version of the 2.5 liter four-cylinder is available. It produces 265 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, an improvement over the 2009 version which produced 243 horsepower and 241 pound-feet of torque. The 2009 Legacy had a 3.0 liter six-cylinder option for those looking for more power. In 2010, this six-cylinder option has been upgraded to a 3.6 liter engine that delivers 256 horsepower and 247 pound-feet of torque, significantly more than the 245 horsepower and 215 pound-feet of torque of the 2009 Legacy. The fuel efficiency of these two options is less impressive than the base 2.5 liter engines. The supercharged 2.5 liter and the 3.6 liter options EPA estimates were 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway for a combined 21 mpg. Both the base engine and the 3.6 liter options can use regular fuel but the turbocharged engine requires premium fuel.
